Would it have been less coveted if its emblematic river, the Seine, had never led to Paris? Not likely, because Haute-Normandie is enchanting in its own right: a welcoming table and an exceptional natural and architectural cultural heritage.
Eure (27), Seine Maritime (76)
Due to bombing from the Second World War, the architecture in its cities often displays two sides. The stone buildings and half-timbered houses of yesteryear stand side by side with whole districts rebuilt in concrete in the 50's.
In the countryside, tradition remains strong. Characteristic of the landscape are the half-timbered farm style country homes and cottages with roof lines topped with iris, whose robust rhizomes help anchor reeds to the roofs.
Haute-Normandie sits mainly on vast limestone plateaus. Crossed by several waterways, it offers various settings, always of a pronounced nature: high white cliffs plunge into the roiling waters of the English Channel or, more peaceably, into the Seine, majestic forests, groves and cultivated lands renowned for the richness of their soil.
From the ruins of the fortress of Château-Gaillard, built by Richard the Lionhearted, to its estuary's vast manufacturing areas, it is also thanks to its kingly river, the Seine, that the region was conquered, asserted its difference and gained its prosperity. Rouen and Le Havre are two of the five top ports in France.
Young, dynamic, near the capital, Haute-Normandie has many assets. Its fare focuses mainly on dairy products—butter, heavy cultured cream, and renowned cheeses—, fish and seafood, as well as the omnipresent apple. Not content to adorn Normandy's famous pies, this bountiful fruit gave rise to two emblematic beverages: cider and calvados.
While it rains frequently, especially along the coast, the region derives many benefits from its maritime climate and mild winter temperatures. A rich and varied vegetation enhances its fertile soil.
